The grapes used to make our wine were grown near the St. Donatus Chapel on Mount Csobánc. In the Badacsony wine region, the name “Chapel Wine” signified a unique, exceptional quality. Wines produced in the vicinity of the St. Anne Chapel in Badacsony were first labeled “Kápolnás” by Styrian buyers, who sometimes paid two or three times the price for them. It was no different on the southern slope of Csobánc Hill: in the immediate vicinity of the chapel, the princes and Counts of Esterházy were the largest and most renowned producers for centuries.
The Kápolna Olaszrizling is part of our exceptional single-vineyard series, and this variety is well-deserving of its place here. It perfectly showcases the exceptional characteristics of the Csobánc mountain terroir. Its aroma is subtle, mineral-driven, and slowly unfolding, and its flavor lingers long after tasting.
Welschriesling
Quite in contrast to its European name – which means Romanic Riesling or Olaszrizling in Hungarian – this variety of wine is neither Italian nor Riesling. Its origin is still disputed; however, we know that it has been brought to the Carpathian Basin from our Western European neighbours. Although it shares part of its name with Rhine Riesling, they are genetically unrelated. Having found its perfect home in Central Europe, the variety is grown by several wine regions in Hungary. For most Hungarians, the name Olaszrizling has become synonymous with white wine. Suitable to produce light white wines as well as full-bodied items with long ageing potential…Or for a nice spritzer in summer!
